ATTRACTIONS

MELIMOYU VOLCANO

Active volcano located in northern Patagonia that sits amidst the Moraleda canal and the Gulf of Corcovado. It can be found south of the mouth of the Palena River, in front of Melinka Island. On the edge of the crater there are two distinct peaks, the northern one being the tallest point of the volcano. The whole volcano is surrounded on all sides by a thick Valdivian forest which makes it difficult to get to the glaciers that maintained this huge summit unexplored until the year 2000.

PALENA RIVER

An important river that begins in Lake Vintter in Argentina and enters through Argentinian territory where it’s called Carrenleufú River. On its route towards Chile it picks up waters from tributaries such as Encuentro, Tigre, Moro and El Tranquilo Rivers, in few kilometers becoming an important river with calm superficial waters and strong-flowing deep waters.

It’s excellent for shore fishing or on small boats. Numerous backwaters, rock walls and pools make it great for fishing rainbow trout and salmonids.

Fishing season starts the second weekend of October and salmon fishing lasts mainly from the third week of February until the end of April.

TEMPERATE RAIN FOREST

Melimoyu belongs to the Valdivian-Chiloe Eco-region, a reserve made up of large extensions of native forests. It is included in the Magellan Marine Province of the oceanic South American temperate eco-zone. It exclusively covers the center-south zone of Chile on the Pacific Ocean’s southeast waters, in Aysén and Los Lagos Regions. It includes all waters and coasts from the northern part of Los Rios Region, reaching the south until the Taitao Peninsula.

VENTISQUERO QUELAT

One of the most captivating places here is the Queulat hanging glacier, located 180 kilometers (112 mi) south of Chaitén and 165 kilometers (102 mi) north of Coyhaique. Famous for its greatness and beauty, it offers scenery in blue and green hues that define it as a natural monument. Its name, Queulat or Queolat, in Chono language, means “sound of waterfalls.” Declared National Park on October 13th 1983, it ranges over 154,093 hectares and opens from September to April. On its grounds you can carry out a series of recreational activities like trekking, excursions, boat rides, cycling, camping, picnic, sport fishing, horseback riding, scenic photography, and observe the local flora and fauna. Among its most important attractions are: its rivers, glaciers, the Queulat Hanging Glacier, Padre García Falls, Témpanos Lagoon, Condor Falls, Risopatrón Lake, Los Pumas Lagoon and the Queulat Hillside sector.
