Walk along the hotel’s trails, visiting the Rocotal Observatory, sacred pre-Inca pictographs and an enchanting waterfall. Discover the fascinating yet fragile ecosystem of the Machu Picchu cloud forest and learn about its many endemic plants and animals. The Nature Walk offers guests a glimpse of Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel’s 372 native orchid species, numerous ferns and bromeliads, as well as an introduction to the Vilcanota river system and the tea house.

ORCHIDS
Walk through the orchid garden to observe some of the hotel’s 372 different orchids in bloom. Discover this extraordinary plant family, which has captured the human imagination for centuries. From the largest orchid flower in the world – the lady slipper (Phragmipedium caudatum) – to species new to science that have been discovered on the hotel grounds and tiny flowering specimens that can be properly appreciated only through a magnifying glass; there are orchids to amaze both the newly inquisitive and the expert.

BIRDS
Start at 6:30 in the morning to take advantage of the optimum time of day for cloud-forest bird watching. A river observatory offers the possibility of sightings of the sought-after torrent duck and the white-capped dipper, then proceed to a productive tanager feeding area, where silver-beaked, blue-necked, fawn-breasted and saffron-crowned tanagers can be found. Along the hotel’s pathways, be on the lookout for the cock-of-the-rock, the golden-headed quetzal and many of the 16 different hummingbirds identified on the grounds, including the booted racket-tail and the green-and-white hummingbirds, which are endemic to the area.

TEA
A visit to the tea plantations and tea house to discover the wonders of the ancient tea making process, watch as the freshly picked leaves are hand ground over rocks, or slowly dried over an open fire. A glass of fresh iced-tea direct from the Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel’s tea house completes the experience.

SPECTACLED BEAR
Once common throughout the Andes, the spectacled bear is now critically endangered. The Inkaterra Association and the Peruvian National Institute of Natural Resources (INRENA) manage the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel’s Spectacled Bear Project, an effort designed to recover and reintroduce into their natural habitat bears that have been negatively affected by human impact; gain insight into the fascinating world of these large mammals (the only bear species in South America), the challenges to survival they face in today’s world will also be highlighted.

TWILIGHT WALK
This early evening walk designed to connect on a spiritual level with the environment and the historical energy of the Machu Picchu area. MANDOR
A two-hour walk along the Vilcanota River following the railroad tracks into the Mandor Valley to visit its waterfall. The Valley is inhabited by varied and fascinating birdlife, including cock-of-the-rocks, speckle-faced parrots and green jays; relax and bathe under the waterfall before walking back to the hotel in the shadow of Machu Picchu.

PUTUKUSI
An exhilarating climb up Putukusi Mountain culminates in a spectacular view of the Machu Picchu ruins from the far side of the Vilcanota valley. On ascend appreciate the stark contrast between the mountain cloud forest and the elfin forest, as well as the interesting variation in trees, orchids and birds. World’s record for shortest operative climb.
Not recommended for children under 15 years old.

INCA TRAIL
The Inca trail on this one-day trip, visiting the important Inca ruins of Wiñay Wayna and capturing your first view of Machu Picchu from Inti Punku, the Sun Gate. The steady climb along the Inca trail allows experiencing and observing diverse mountain habitats, ruins and a beautiful waterfall. After reaching the Sun Gate and taking the time there to appreciate Machu Picchu lying below, enjoy a fully guided tour of the citadel, including Intiwatana (the Sun Dial) and the Sacred Plaza. Afterwards, a delicious lunch will be served in the restaurant of the Sanctuary Lodge, followed by a 30-minute bus ride back to the Machu Picchu village and the Hotel.

APU MACHU PICCHU
Hike the Machu Picchu mountain for two and a half hours from the archaeological site, and reach the Summit of Apu Machu Picchu. This trail, accessed from the Reserve, joins parts of the Inca trail leading to the Sun Gate before climbing to the mountain's highest point. From there, enjoy the view of soaring eagles as well as Machu Picchu, other significant ruins in the area, Putukusi, Wayna Picchu, Salkantay mountain and the Vilcanota River.

MUSEUM & MARKET
Visit the open-air market at Machu Picchu village (Aguas Calientes), filled with displays of local Andean curios and clothing, then make the 30-minute walk to the archaeological site bridge and the Manuel Chavez Ballón Museum, home to excellent maps, displays and artifacts related to the archaeological site.

POQUES MOUNTAIN
Hike from the hotel grounds up to the Poques Mountain range. Walk for 3 hours though three different ecological systems: premountain cloud forest, mountain cloud forest and elfin forest. It is the most impressive view of the park where six archeological sites may be observed: Choquesuysuy, Wiñay Wayna, Chachabamba, Inti Punku, Putukusi and Machu Picchu village.
