What to do after you have explored central Buenos Aires, and without taking a flight?

Estancias top the list, and an estancia experience is indeed one way to immerse yourself into the culture of the country. These sprawling farms often appear to be country estates rather than working farms, and many today make accepting visitors one of their business activities. A stay affords a glimpse at the daily activities, an immersion into family history and a chance to unwind and enjoy the countryside.

While not in Argentina, one of the "activity-in-a-day" available is to take the "RiverPlane" to Colonia, across the Rio de la Plata in Uruguay. The "flight" by huge, modern hydrofoil with all the amenities including Duty Free shop and buffet-style snack bar, takes only an hour. The port is close to the historic part of this old walled city, first founded in Uruguay. The old part of town has cobble-stone streets, colonial buildings, eclectic shops and restaurants, and exploring by foot is a delightful way to spend a day.

San Antonio de Areco, some 2 hours northwest of Buenos Aires, is a typical town on the pampas. There is a small but excellent Ricardo Guiraldes Gaucho museum, named after the author of Don Segundo Sombra who once lived in the area, and a Gaucho Silver Museum and Workshop. Several estancias in the area accept visitors for day and overnight stays.
