OUR HISTORY - learn about sustainability and environmental practices

Historically, the vast amount of canyons, valleys and prairies of Estancia Huemules have been “summer places for stock”, that is, high areas with lots of grass and water for cattle. The cattle used to be herded during the summer months, first by the aborigines over 150 years ago, before the Welsh immigrants arrived in the area circa 1886. Later on, these settlers followed this practice for their cattle production and still continues until today. Estancia Huemules used this area for pasture until two years ago.

 

It was precisely at that time when the current owners began pondering the idea they had when they first saw this land: preserving the territory’s Nature to show it to XXI century world travelers.

 

Some decades ago, in one of the numerous existing hillsides, mining activities boomed and many of the forest trees were actually used for wood. Nowadays, the area’s magnificent natural resources are preserved solely for contemplation and enjoyment of our guests.

All our actions have a single goal: To do what we believe in, and we believe in sustainability. We have converted the six thousand hectares into a Mountain Reserve, we have selected geodesic domes to lodge our privileged visitors because their structure is strong and resists the harsh Patagonian climate, but at the same time, because it is more gracious and has lower impact on the natural environment. We have used recycled wood in our furniture, we have hired 100% local personnel and companies, we have carefully trained our people in the environmental management of our services, we have created an advanced sewage treatment system that sterilizes waste in a clean and odorless way, we have designed an energy system based on the eternal hydrological cycle. This way, we are paying tribute and honoring Patagonia and its people.

Nevertheless, our commitment to hospitality provides the utmost comfort while maintaining that special feeling of living in Nature.

OUR CUISINE
During the day, meals are the perfect break to regain energy after all the activities in Nature. At night, it is time to celebrate, the celebration of the fabulous day we spent outdoors. We will savor typical dishes of the area paired with the best Patagonian wines and beers to celebrate the end of the day.

BREAKFAST To start the day with brand new energy we offer a typical buffet breakfast with hot infusions and freshly squeezed juices of seasonal fruits. We also offer a selection of eggs a la carte and croissants, freshly baked breads and homemade marmalades in addition to cereals, yogurts and an assortment of regional fruits.		LUNCH A time to rest amid Nature in preparation for the next activity. Lunches at Huemules are an invitation to learn and enjoy typical Patagonian cooking techniques where fire is the leading character. Cordero a la cruz, (upright charcoal grilled lamb) a typical Argentinian barbecue, served with grilled seasonal vegetables and salads prepared with herbs from our very own garden are just an example of what we offer to renew energies for the next mountain adventure.
	DINNER At dinner we offer a selection of typical Patagonian dishes, regional products, Patagonian beef, lamb, trout and game meats prepared according to traditional and local recipes. All of them accompanied by the finest selection of Patagonian and international wines to celebrate a well lived day with Nature.
WE ALSO OFFER an exquisite selection of Patagonian wines and beers to accompany your meals. At night, you can also enjoy the best drinks at our Domo Living area		SNACKS Upon arrival from the tours, in the warm atmosphere of the restaurant, hot infusions, delicious pastries, chocolate and fruits will be served to help us relax and share experiences while waiting for the magical sunset

Our Reserve offers 6200 hectares of Patagonian Andean Forests with numerous circuits for the most incredible activities in Nature. Your stay includes daily excursions you can choose that demand different levels of physical effort

These excursions will allow to tour the lenga and ńire forests, cross melting snow formed creeks and discover at every step new landscapes in imposing Patagonia. In our excursions we will be able to view the most representative local fauna animals: woodpeckers, caiquenes, condors, foxes and deer, among others.
