Buzios
Brasil

In the words of Footprint Brasil Handbook:

From Cabo Frio the RJ-102 heads 25 kilometers northeast to the next resort up the coast, the sophisticated yet informal Buzios. This charming seaside town (full name Armacao de Buzios) is well-spread out with low-rise, but attractive development.  It is situated on a peninsula and is the perfect choice for those who want to enjoy the sun and the sea by day, and after dark, its internationally famous nightlife and gastronomy.  Its climate is sunny and windy all year round.

Originally a small fishing community, founded in 1740 when a trader call Braz de Pina started a whale fishery, Buzios remained virtually unknown until the 1950's when its natural beauty started to attract the Brazilian jet-set who turned the village into a fashionable summer resort.

In 1964, Brigitte Bardot visited Buzios and the photos of her,. walking barefoot along the beach, brought focus of the world's press to this "lost paradise in the tropics".  Soon many wealthy families, foreign tourists and the travel and leisure industry started to move to Buzios, building over 150 pousadas, around 50 restaurants as well as open-air cafes, bars, clubs, art galleries and fashion shops.

As many of these businesses are foreign-owned, English, French, German and Spanish are widely spoken. A local joke says that, in population, Buenos Aires is the second city in the world in summer; Buzios is the first.
