ABOUT THE AMAZONIA LODGE - in their own words:

Our 360 hectares are in the pre-mountain rain forest.  The altitude range of the property is between 500 m to 1050 m with different kinds of habitats (see the bird list).  This range in altitude explains the high diversity of wildlife. It is a peruvian paradise for Birders, Birdwatchers, Photographers.

The comfortable Amazonia Lodge contains 15 rooms and a total of 30 beds.  There are 8 bathrooms with flush toilets and hot water showers.   The Lodge  offers a nice dining area, great food, lighted walkways at night, time for siestas, flexible schedules, an excellent trail system, and super birding right from your front porch.

Our new 65 foot high viewing platform located in the middle of a mountain 725 meter (2,380 feet) above sea level.  This is the only tower located in the pre-mountain rainforest of Peru.

Amazonia Lodge prides itself in having a marvelous trail system that is constantly maintained by the staff.   The trail system covers many different habitats because of the 500 - 1,050 meter altitude difference.

LOCATION
It is located at Km 192 on the road from Cuzco to Shintuya in the department of Madre de Dios inside the cultural zone of Manu Biosphere Reserve.

HISTORY
The lodge is located in the tropical lowland rainforest of Manu Biosphere Reserve.  The Yábar family, from Cusco, established the lodge in 1980 which used to be a tea plantation in the 1970's.  The book Birds of South America by Robert S. Ridgely refers to the lodge as Hacienda Amazonia.  We also offer birdwatching tours in Peru(Birding in Peru).

CLIMATE
The temperature fluctuations are from 18ºC. during the night to 34ºC. during the day.  Sometimes a phenomenon call "FRIAGE" occurs when the south winds come up from Patagonia.  This causes the temperature to descend during a 3 to 4 day period to 12º C.  The rainfall per year is 5 meters.
