Bodega BOUZA

Near Montevideo
URUGUAY

ABOUT BODEGA BOUZA - in their own words:
Originally built in 1942 by Numa Pesquera following the model of a French chateaux. This family already managed the concept of “fine wine”, front-line idea for the wines of Uruguay at that time. In 2002 we restored the building maintaining the original idea. We now have a blend of traditional concepts and the necessary technology to ensure the best modern vinification practices.

Our view of life tells us that state of the art technology is not enough if it doesn't go hand in hand with a gentle handling of the fruit and conditions that allow minimal intervention in each and every process. With these principles, and keeping the highest standard of hygiene, we have managed to meet our final goal: maximum expression of the fruit in our wine and the adequate concentration for cellaring potential.

The property consists of two vineyards. One is beside our winery in Melilla, 5 kms from Santa Lucia River. The other is in the region of Las Violetas, a traditional vine growing area, 39 kms north of downtown Montevideo and the River Plate.
  • At Melilla vineyard, which is beside our winery, we have about 5 hectares of young Albariņo, Chardonnay, Merlot and Tannat vines.
  • At Las Violetas vineyard we have about 12 hectares of the following varieties, Albariņo, Chardonnay, Merlot, Tempranillo and Tannat of which four hectares are between 16 and 30 years old and the rest are young vines. These vines were selected for high quality and low yields.
Of our own vines, we only use those that achieve adequate quality standards. We aim to have well ventilated fruit, with good diffused light, along with a careful guide of the canopy with maximum sun exposure.

In the total production of wines of Uruguay, Bodega Bouza is present with about 90.000 bottles a year.
