Quito Teleferico |
The Teleferico Quito started
operations in early 2005. It offers spectacular panoramic vistas of the city and
surrounding mountains. There are eighteen cars with a capacity of 6 persons each, running every 10 secods or every 33 seconds, depending on the demand. The departure terminal has facilities and a few shops. The ascent takes 8 to 10 minutes traveling some 2500 linear meters, going from 2950 meters (8850 feet) to 4050 meters (12,150 feeet) altitude. At the base of the teleferico station, there is an amusement park. a collection of boutiques and shops offering handicrafts, jewelry, ceramics, clothing paintings and art, a collection of restaurants ranging from sports bar, to typical foods, Fondu, Italian and international cuisine as well as snacks and fast food. At the summit there is a small complex of shops and snack shops and pathways going higher for views over the northern part of the city. There is a trail going to a nearby summit; the trek is estimated to take around 3 hours each direction. The best time to take the teleferico is first thing in the morning, or if the weather is clear, in the late afternoon to experience sunset over the city. Be sure to layer clothing, to take off if it is a sunny windless day and to layer on if the winds are blowing. Take sunblock and a hat with a bill, and plenty of film. |
