Quito

Must Do's

The Must Do's of Quito are simple.

To get oriented, take the city tour, which will introduce you to the city. You'll visit the historic center of town, Plaza Independencia and several of the some 86 churches and get the feel of the city.

A visit to the "Mitad del Mudo" complex, some 23 km from Quito, with a typical colonial town with restaurants and gift shops, international pavillons, an excellent ethno-graphic museum, a planetarium and the Equaltorial Line where you can straddle two hemispheres at once!

Spend a hour or two at FOLKLORE, the store of the late Olga Fisch, where folk art and traditional fine art merge. After you have explored the many rooms, visit the small but excellent museum up-stairs and then have lunch or dinner At El Galpon, a   wonderful restaurant in the back of the store, dining on creative traditional Ecuadorian cuisine surrounded by an eclectic collection of folk art, many almost museum quality pieces, and all for sale.

Visit the Museo Guayasamin in Bellavista surburb, with the artist’s works plus a precolombian and colonial collection. The museum exhibits an excellent sample of Pre-Columbian, colonial and contemporary art from the private collection of the famous Ecuadorian artist Oswaldo Guayasamin. Next door is the "La Capilla del Hombre" dedicated to the Pre-Columbian man and holding many of his murals.

Stroll Avenida Amazonas, lined with shops overflowing with handicrafts and with a collectin of informal restaurants and sidewalk cafes.
