Paintings in Pelorinho shop |
Salvador, Bahia Shopping |
A must visit is to the H Stern shop at the edge of Pelourinho, not only to see the exquisite jewelery and local handicrafts, but for a walk through a replica of a mine.
Pelourinho is jammed packed full of shops that have paintings,. wood carvings, indian artifacts and lace, one of the "the" things to buy. Many of the newest and trendiest stores are in Pelourinho.
The Mercado Modelo in the lower city is a two-story building with stall after stall after stall of clothes, jewelery, handicrafts, lace, paintings, music, spices - you name, it, you can find it. While some of the vendors can be aggressive, most are pleasant and anxious to help you find the right souvenir. It's worth a couple of hours poking around, especially for the special spices and other "cult" items.
If you are into handmade lace, buy it at the source - i.e., the shops who actually make it. Otherwise you will probably be getting the machine made version.
