ABOUT Paso Horses - from Insight Guide Peru:
"Trujillanos are proud of their Caballos de Paso, a fine breed of horses with a tripping gait that has made them known worldwide. Another legacy of the Spanish, since thre were no horses on the continent at the time of the Inca empire, these horsees have been immortalized in Peruvian waltzes. In particular, composer Chabuca Granda, for whom a monument is erected in the bohemian neighborhood of Barranco in Lima, wrote of the chalanes or riders in their jipijapa sombreros upon their honey-colored mounts. These riders still compete in their own form of the marinera dance - smoothly guiding their horses through the steps."
